Dear Families,

School Uniforms will Continue: Thank you to those families of students in grades K-4 for filling out and sending in the uniform surveys from the May newsletter. A total of 142 surveys were returned, with 73 responding to keep uniforms and 69 not. If purchasing uniforms is difficult for your family, please contact the school office to see what extra uniforms might be on hand at the school. If you have uniforms that your children have outgrown, please consider donating them to school for other families to use.

Keep Kids Reading in the Summer! Here’s why: Research on the correlation between achievement and reading outside of school clearly shows that reading volume is associated with academic performance (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding, 1988) by building knowledge and vocabulary. To illustrate this point, consider three hypothetical 5th grade students:
1. The first student reads 40 minutes a day on average, consuming more than 2.3 million words per year. Think about how much background knowledge is built in addition to a rich vocabulary.
2. The second student reads on average for 12 minutes a day, resulting in about 601,000 words consumed per year, or 1.7 million fewer words than his high-achieving classmate.
3. The third student reads for only 90 seconds a day on average outside of school. This child is exposed to only 51,000 words per year (about the same reading volume the first student reads in a week). He will enter high school nearly 7 million words behind his high-achieving classmate, with a considerably smaller amount of background knowledge and vocabulary.

So what to do? 1. Motivate your child to read by offering books on topics and genres of interest. 2. Read together and model reading. 3. Visit the library often and check out books. 4. Sign up for the public library’s summer reading program. The theme is “Libraries Rock!” Weekly activities will take place as well as prizes given for visiting the library. 6. Participate in Mesquite’s Summer Reading Club (paper coming home today!).

Reading Photos: Send me your reading photos throughout the summer for posting on our Facebook page! Show us what you are reading, where you are reading, your visits to the library, reading together, book recommendations…
